Mar. 10th, 2016 03:39 pmCanon: Our Fair City, a post-apocalyptic podcast set in the climate change ravaged remains of Hartford, Connecticut. Four hundred years after the collapse of modern society, the people of Hartford are ruled and protected by HartLife, an insurance company that resides in the Tower, and insures the safety of all its Policies living in the Tunnels below.
Name: Nathan Rourke
Age: 18
Brief History: Nathan is the only child of Elizabeth Rourke, a StreetSafe Agent, and a since deceased father. Nathan's father disappeared when he was young, having apparently become involved in some anti-corporation dealings. Nathan did well in school, and wanted to join the Science Academy after graduation. However, despite passing all his academic examinations he failed to pass his Identity Variants section and was deemed unfit. He was assigned an unknown job, but never attended it. Angry at a system that had taken his father away from him as well as denying him his dream career, Nathan began working for crime boss and lightening rigger Lucky Strike, mainly with petty theft procuring items from the Tower.
Personality: To steal a phrase I saw on a Tumblr one time, Nathan is best described as 'a meandering force of self-serving jackassery'. He's first and foremost a deeply selfish person, and doesn't have much loyalty to anything or anyone. He'll work for just about anyone with few qualms as long as it keeps himself in one piece. Despite this, he also has a history of making terrible impulse decisions that usually end up putting him in deadly situations. He has a smart mouth and is a fast talker, something that he thinks helps get him out of trouble but usually just leaves people too annoyed at him to want to bother with him further. He can be a lot more clever than he looks, though. He's pretty damn good at reading people and figuring out exactly what he can say to get them to give him what he wants. He is not, however, all that good at actually making people like or trust him. Mostly because he doesn't care enough about anyone else to give a damn about what they think of him.
Fundamentally Nathan does not see himself as a villain, or even a bad person. He's just a regular guy who's got himself into some really bad situations and made the best of it. What he fails to see is that he brought most of these situations on himself in the first place.
